After underdog Morgan State took a 30-29 lead into the halftime break Thursday, the Northern Iowa men’s team did some reflection on the need to play to its potential.
The Panthers then came out and played 20 minutes they’ll consider more memorable, outscoring the Bears by a 44-23 margin in the second half to post a 73-53 victory at home in one of the USA-based games of the Cancun Challenge.
UNI closed with five players in double figures, with both Deon Mitchell and Paul Jesperson scoring 13 points. The Panthers ended up shooting better than 55 percent from the field while taking just 38 shots – a large chunk of points came from the free-throw line, where UNI was 24-of-34.
Morgan State (0-3)saw Blake Bozeman score 19 points; three other players tallied six points. The Bears outrebound Northern Iowa, 38-33, but went merely 4-of-11 from the free-throw line while shooting just 34 percent.
