The Cancun Challenge D-I college basketball tournament recently earned high praise from Sports Illustrated magazine, which ranked 16 tournaments that give teams the opportunity to get off campus and get to a unique destination before the start of conference play. In the Dec. 1, 2014 issue, the Cancun Challenge was listed as No. 2 and was specifically singled out for the access to a private beach and the six pools found at the tournament’s site, the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
The Cancun Challenge takes place in and around the Thanksgiving holiday, with Northern Iowa winning the top men’s division in 2014, while Washington and Princeton both went 3-0 in the women’s division. This marked the 10th season for the women’s challenge and the seventh run for the men. Past men’s champions include Wisconsin, Wichita State, Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky. On the women’s side, power programs such as Duke, Connecticut, North Carolina, USC and Pittsburgh have previously attended.
Professional and experienced staffers take the mystery out of international travel for teams and supporters.
