Seton Hall held off NC State’s fourth-quarter rally to claim a 58-55 victory Thursday in the RiViera Division of the women’s Cancun Challenge.
Tabatha Richardson-Smith hit a free throw with 14 seconds left to put the Pirates (6-0) up, 56-53, and teammate Lubirdia Gordon blocked a 3-pointer from Miah Spencer of the Wolfpack (5-1). A jump ball was called with 1.9 seconds left - NC State scored an uncontested layup with Seton Hall protecting the 3-point line, and Richardson-Smith was fouled.
She hit a free throw, and Spencer’s full-court heave at the buzzer was short of the rim.
Richardson-Smith had 18 points and eight rebounds; Aleesha Powell scored 17 points to go with seven rebounds, and Shakena Richardson added 10 points and four assists. For the Wolfpack, Spencer scored 13 points and had five steals, while Ashley Williams scored 11 points and Carlee Schuhmacher added 10 points.
Seton Hall was just 5-of-28 from the 3-point line (18 percent) and had 19 turnovers, but the Pirates out-rebounded NC State, 56-39. Seton Hall also was 0-of-5 from the free-throw line in the first half, but hit six straight in the third quarter.
Next for the Pirates is Friday’s game vs. Northern Iowa at 9 p.m. ET, with NC State facing UAB on Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
