Northern Iowa scored just 10 points in the fourth quarter Thursday, but that was just enough to get past Georgia Tech, 61-58, in the Riviera Division of the women’s Cancun Challenge.
Ellie Herzberg hit four free throws in the last 32 seconds, and the Panthers (3-1) were able to walk off winners after Aaliyah Whiteside’s 3-pointer at the buzzer bounced away. The Yellow Jackets (4-2) had tied the game at 57-all after a steal and layup by Whiteside with 1:40 to go, and had a 58-57 lead after a Whiteside free throw at 34.6 seconds.
Herzberg and Madison Weekly each had 15 points for Northern Iowa. Whiteside finished with 22 points, six rebounds and three steals. Roddreka Rogers scored 13 points and added 13 rebounds for Georgia Tech.
Northern Iowa will play Friday against Seton Hall at 9 p.m. ET, while Georgia Tech takes on High Point at 6:30 p.m.
