MISSISSIPPI STATE 65, ARIZONA STATE 57
Seventh-ranked Mississippi State took an early lead, fell behind, and then pulled away late thanks to the terrific interior play of junior center Teaira McCowan, who had eight fourth-quarter rebounds as the Bulldogs topped No. 24 Arizona State.
Mississippi State (4-0) was just 1-of-13 from the field in the second quarter as the Sun Devils (4-1) used a 10-0 run to take the lead. In the fourth quarter, MSU came up with some key steals while McCowan went to work down low -- her shot and free throw with 2:47 remaining gave the Bulldogs a 61-54 lead.
ASU got it to 61-57 with 1:55 left on a free throw by Kiara Russell, but there were no more points coming for the Sun Devils the rest of the way. McCowan added 14 rebounds; Victoria Vivians had 17 points, and Roshunda Johnson tallied 16 points and four steals.
Both teams had issues with turnovers (MSU had 19, ASU had 18); the Bulldogs did close with a 40-33 edge in rebounds. The Sun Devils were paced by Kianna Ibis, who had 13 points, while Sabrina Haines added 10 points.
