Jacksonville State took control in the second half with a 21-0 run against Western Carolina, giving the Gamecocks their first win of the year and advancing them to the Mayan Division championship game on Wednesday against North Florida.
Jacksonville State (1-3) outscored the opposition by 22 points in the second half and got 15 points each from Jamall Gregory and Derek St. Hilaire, but the key to the game was defense. The Catamounts set a single-game Cancun Challenge record with 19 steals and forced 35 turnovers; they also played cleanly and allowed WCU to shoot just four free throws. Christian Cunningham added 11 points for JSU, and De'Torrian Ware scored 10 points.
The Catamounts (1-4) got 17 points from Matt Halvorsen; Carlos Dotson added 14 points and 10 rebounds. WCU had a 43-26 edge in rebounds.
