PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX – Wisconsin shook off a rough start and an off game offensively from star Serah Williams to move past Providence in Mayan Tournament action Friday at the Women’s Cancun Challenge.
The Badgers (6-2) were paced by Carter McCray, who had 19 points and seven rebounds. Natalie Leuzinger scored 16 points, eight coming from the free-throw line in the final 90 seconds of the game.16 points.
Tess Myers had 11 points and Ronnie Porter closed with 10 points and six assists. Williams, who entered the game averaging almost 20 points per contest, was 0-7 from the field in the first half and finished with four points, while still reeling in 15 rebounds. Wisconsin ended up shooting 9-for-20 from 3-point range and led in rebounds, 36-26.
Wisconsin took a 57-47 lead with about four minutes left in the game after 3-pointers from Halle Douglass and Porter.
The Friars (3-5) got 21 points from Grace Efosa, and Olivia Olsen added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Providence was 2-for-13 from long range and just 3-for-8 from the free-throw line.
The Mayan Tournament at the event concludes Saturday, with San Diego State facing Providence and Wisconsin taking on VCU.
