Second-half scoring bursts send Lions past UND for win in Mayan Division third-place game

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX — Southeastern Louisiana prevailed over North Dakota on Wednesday in the third-place game of the Mayan Division at the Men’s Cancun Challenge, finally taking control with a 19-3 scoring burst over a seven-minute stretch late in the second half.

The Lions (3-4) were paced by Sam Hines Jr., who scored 17 points. Brody Rowbury came through with 13 points and eight rebounds and Jakevion Buckley contributed 12 points. SLU had the rebounding edge at 37-30 and were a solid 8-for-16 from 3-point range.

A 3-pointer from North Dakota’s Mier Panoam tied the game at 53-all with 9:24 remaining after SLU had moved out to a 10-point lead. The Lions countered with a 12-0 run capped by a layup from Sam Hines Jr. and then suppressed any thoughts of another UND rally with their production late in the game.

The Fighting Hawks (3-4) saw Amar Kuljuhovic come through with 14 points and seven rebounds; Treysen Eaglestaff had 13 points and Dariyus Woodson scored 11 points. UND finished with 32 percent shooting overall and was just 7-for-33 from long range.
