San Diego State moves to 8-0 on the year with win over VCU

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MX – Adryana Quezada led the way for San Diego State with 16 points and seven rebounds, and the Aztecs moved to 8-0 on the year with a victory over VCU in the Mayan Tournament of the Women’s Cancun Challenge on Friday.

Cali Clark added eight points and 11 rebounds as SDSU worked through its 19 turnovers to keep the clamps on the Rams (4-3). San Diego State closed with a 40-37 lead in rebounds and held VCU to just 28 percent shooting – the Aztecs prevailed despite going 1-for-12 from 3-point range.

The Rams got 16 points from Mary-Anna Asare; Timaya Lewis-Eutsey scored 14 points and Mykel Parham finished with 13 rebounds. VCU made four 3-pointers on 17 attempts.

Asare scored VCU’s first points of the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer with 5:28 remaining, and her 3-pointer at 1:01 cut the Aztec lead to 51-46. Kim Villalobos hit two free throws with 33 seconds left to ice the game.

The Mayan Tournament at the event concludes Saturday, with San Diego State facing Providence and Wisconsin taking on VCU.
