AUBURN, Ala. – Freshmen Mustapha Heron and Danjel Purifoy each reached double figures for the third time in three games this season, guiding Auburn past Eastern Kentucky in a U.S. game of the men’s Cancun Challenge.
The Tigers (3-0) outscored the Colonels (1-2) by 18 points in the second half. Heron was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and had his first career double-double with 10 rebounds. Purifoy had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Ronnie Johnson topped 1,000 career points as he put in 13 against Eastern Kentucky.
Auburn had a 25-12 edge in made free throws, but the Tigers only shot 61 percent from the line.
Nick Mayo scored 22 points for the Colonels, and Dillon Avare chipped in with 14 points.
