NORMAL, IL – South Dakota State showed an accurate shooting eye on the road Thursday, moving past Illinois State in one of the U.S.-based games of the 2015 Cancun Challenge.
The Jackrabbits (3-0) will play at TCU on Saturday before making the trip to Mexico, where they will face Houston Baptist on Nov. 24. The Redbirds (1-2) host Houston Baptist on Saturday and then take on No. 3 Maryland on Nov. 24.
South Dakota State had a 19-point lead at halftime and cruised the rest of the way, with five players hitting double figures in scoring. George Marshall had 18 points, Deondre Parks added 15 points and seven rebounds, and Reed Tellinghuise added 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Jackrabbits had a 48-36 edge in rebounding.
Illinois State was more effective in the second half but had too much of a deficit to scale. DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell scored 15 points to go with five rebounds, and Paris Lee added 14 points. MiKyle McIntosh scored 12 points for the Redbirds, who were just 6-of-24 from the 3-point line and 15-of-30 in free throws.
