It serves as a powerful reminder that many children in the Playa Del Carmen region would also benefit from some attention, given the explosive growth in the area and the fact poverty is a major concern for thousands of families.
Among its many other contributions in the region, the Seaside Rotary group works closely with two of the local non-profits operating in and around Playa del Carmen -- KKIS and Kicks 4 Kids. Keeping Kids In School is looking for donations of school supplies, while the Kicks program is designed to get safe and sturdy footwear to children living in the remote villages of the peninsula. Fans of the women’s and men’s teams competing in the Cancun Challenge are asked to consider bringing school supplies and/or shoes from the USA to the event.
More than 1,100 bags of school supplies from KKIS went to five schools in 2015; in some cases, the assistance was enough to keep certain children from having to leave school entirely. About 300 pairs of shoes were distributed via the Kicks 4 Kids outreach – children in these outlying villages are subject to insect and snake bites on their feet, and Seaside Rotary typically gets the shoes to the children around Christmas.
When bringing items into Mexico for the KKIS and Kicks 4 Kids programs, it’s preferred for you to designate those as gifts and not a donation at customs. It's also best to split up the items among the parties in your group.
